Southern Highlands Racer Improves Championship Position

Staying out of trouble has paid dividends for Oxley College Year 10 student Lachlan Mineeff, who has improved to seventh in the Australian Formula Ford Championship after keeping his nose clean in an incident-filled fourth round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Sandown.

Mineeff was left with plenty of work to do after a less-than-ideal qualifying session left him 17th on the grid for the weekend’s opening race. But a combination of strong speed, intelligent race-craft and skilful evasive action saw Mineeff climb to 11th in Race 1. He improved to eighth in Race 2, and completed the weekend with another eighth-place finish in Race 3.

“The weekend didn’t start the best, as we didn’t quite nail a fast lap in qualifying but we kept learning and improving,” Mineeff said.

“I became more confident with the track during the races, and it was good to make up positions especially in Race 1.”

Mineeff’s chances of gaining more places in the final race were marred by a couple of incidents involving other competitors, which required lengthy recovery operations; the second of these incidents ended the race altogether.

“Sandown is a track where there isn’t a lot of margin for error, and unfortunately there was quite a lot of damage involving some other cars,” Mineeff said.

“In the last race, we had the speed to move further towards the front, but we only completed two racing laps.

“I’m thankful we finished the weekend with a straight car – there were a few incidents we narrowly avoided.

“Overall, it was good to learn another new track, and I’m looking forward to the next round where we’ll be racing alongside the Supercars Championship,” Mineeff concluded.

The fifth round of the Australian Formula Ford Championship will be held at Tailem Bend, 24-26 August.
